Vitamin B for kids

Energy for body & mind

B vitamins are among the essential nutrients that are also very important for children. We need them – whether big or small – every day. B vitamins support energy production, the nervous system, the ability to concentrate and many processes that are crucial for growth and development. What makes vitamin B so special and how you can help your children get a good supply, you’ll find out here.

What is vitamin B?

“Vitamin B” doesn’t refer to a single vitamin, but to a whole group—so it’s often called the vitamin B complex. Each B vitamin has different roles, but they work closely together in the body. They support metabolism, help produce energy, promote the formation of red blood cells, and are important for the brain and nerves.

One slightly tricky feature of B vitamins is that they are water-soluble and the body can hardly store them. That’s why we need to get them daily through our diet.

Why is vitamin B important for kids?

Children are in an intense phase of growth and learning—and this is exactly where B vitamins play a key role. Here’s a summary of the most important functions of vitamin B:

Energy for everyday life: Vitamins B1, B2, B3, and B5 help convert carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into energy. Without them, metabolism can hardly function.

Support for nerves & brain: Vitamin B6, B9, and especially B12 are important for focus, learning ability, mood, and healthy nerve function.

Growth & cell division: Folate (B9) and B12 are involved in the formation of new cells—an essential factor in childhood.

Strong immune system: B vitamins are involved in many processes that are important for the body’s defenses.

If one—or several—of these vitamins are lacking, it can show up as tiredness, irritability, pale skin, loss of appetite, concentration problems, cracked lips, or increased susceptibility to infections.

How much vitamin B do children need?

A child’s needs vary depending on the vitamin and age. In general: With a varied diet, children can meet their needs well. However, because the body doesn’t store B vitamins, regular intake is especially important.

In certain phases of life—e.g., during rapid growth spurts, school stress, loss of appetite, frequent infections, or a very one-sided diet—needs may be higher. With a vegetarian or vegan diet, vitamin B12 is also a key point, as it is found almost exclusively in animal-based foods.

Vitamin B-rich foods for kids

Many foods provide several B vitamins at once. Particularly valuable are:

  • Whole grains
  • Oats
  • Legumes
  • Potatoes
  • Nuts & seeds
  • Milk & yogurt
  • Eggs
  • Fish and lean meat
  • Vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, Brussels sprouts, or peas

For children on a vegan diet, getting enough vitamin B12 is very difficult, because this vitamin is only found in relevant amounts in foods of animal origin. In this case, it’s recommended to meet needs through supplements or fortified products.

When can a deficiency occur?

A vitamin B deficiency often develops gradually, especially because symptoms can be non-specific. Typical risk situations include a very one-sided diet, loss of appetite over a longer period, digestive issues or absorption disorders, a vegetarian or vegan diet, frequent infections, high energy expenditure, and phases of heavy school stress or rapid growth.

If you’re unsure whether your child is getting enough, a medical check-up can be helpful.

B vitamins: Daily companions for energy & development

As you can see: B vitamins are true all-rounders! They provide energy, support nerves and the brain, and promote growth and immune function. With a wholesome diet and, if needed, a child-friendly supplement, vitamin B levels can be supported well and easily integrated into everyday family life.
