Its mucous membrane contains countless nerve cells that send signals directly to the brain. This is why the intestine is often referred to as the “second brain”. This system is particularly sensitive in children because their intestinal flora is still developing. If it gets out of balance, this can not only cause stomach ache or flatulence, but also have an impact on the mood of the little adventurers.

When your stomach weighs on your mood

If your child has constipation or diarrhea, they are often irritable, tired or whiny at the same time. No wonder, because impaired digestion and intestinal flora can affect the entire neurotransmitter balance. Serotonin, known as the “happiness hormone”, is largely produced in the gut. If there is a lack of a balanced variety of microorganisms in the intestinal flora, this can affect concentration, sleep quality and well-being.

Nutrition as the key to balance

The good news is: As parents, you can do a lot to support your child’s gut and therefore indirectly also their psyche. It is particularly important for intestinal health that fiber is regularly on the plate. Fruit, vegetables, pulses and wholegrain products provide the intestinal bacteria with food. Apple pieces, cucumber sticks and wholegrain pasta are particularly popular with children. Fermented foods are also important for the intestinal flora. These include yogurt, kefir and sauerkraut. They all contain live lactic acid bacteria that strengthen the gut.

On the other hand, sugar and convenience products should be included in the diet as little as possible. Too much sweetness can disrupt the balance in the gut. Instead, you can offer your kids fresh fruit or homemade sweet snacks such as energy balls or low-sugar muesli bars.

Another important aspect: don’t forget to drink! Water and unsweetened teas help to keep your stomach running smoothly – literally.

Practical tips for your everyday family life

With a few simple routines and playful methods, you can give your children the best possible support. First and foremost: take your children’s gut feeling seriously! If a child often complains of a tummy ache, this is not automatically an excuse. Sometimes it’s a sign of stress or an imbalance in the gut.

Routines such as regular meals, fixed bedtimes and sufficient exercise also help, as they stabilize the body and mind in equal measure. Cooking together with fresh food encourages children to try new things and enjoy healthy eating. Stress also plays a role: a relaxed tummy also needs mental calm. Small breaks, cuddles or a walk can work wonders.

Listen to your gut feeling more often

The phrase “It’s upsetting my stomach” doesn’t just apply to adults!
